Character is a Black, AAPI, Latino, White, MENASA, Native, or Indigenous 11, 12, or 13-year-old boy. Mario is an outsider by default, thoughtful, earnest, and wired a little differently than the kids around him. He experiences synesthesia, sensing the world through overlapping colors, sounds, and emotions, which makes Aurora’s abilities immediately legible to him in a way no one else’s are. Even though Mario has a quiet confidence, he has never quite fit in: not because he lacks social awareness, not because he has red hair, freckles, and braces, but because he’s too direct in a world that rewards performance and clout-chasing. He genuinely wants to belong and understand his peers, and teams up with Aurora to decode school hierarchies, friendships, and social rules together.
